Join our team

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The SXP Instrument, currently under construction, aims to perform time-resolved experiments in the soft X-ray energy range, 0.3 – 3.0 keV. Envisioned as an open port where external users can bring their experimental setups, the main experiment technique to be implemented is time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on solids.

To support the user program at SXP and the Data Analysis Group we are looking for a

Data Analyst – Software Development (f/m/d)

The main purpose of the position is to enable data analysis at the SXP instrument by developing software tools and supporting researchers. This includes to:
  • contribute to the development of an HPC software framework to enable real-time data analysis
  • implement and test end-to-end analysis solutions for different experimental techniques: time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, fluorescence
  • co-design with instrument scientists and user groups analysis and visualisation applications within the EuXFEL existing data analysis frameworks
  • support the instrument scientists and user groups before, during and after they carry out their experiments at EuXFEL
  • translate algorithms and analysis procedures into high quality and high performance implementations
  • participate in the commissioning of the SXP instrument and its user program
  • communicate developments through publications, conferences and workshops
  • BSc, MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a similar field
  • programming experience, ideally within a scientific context
  • good knowledge of Python and/or C/C++ or at least one other programming language
  • strong communication and collaboration skills
  • strong oral and written English skills and the ability to work in a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary team
  • willingness to perform shift work

Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
