European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

Our Controls Group is looking for a

The Karabo internet of things (IoT) Research and Development project will explore possibilities and opportunities to bring the facility's control system, Karabo, onto embedded systems and other small footprint devices. We are looking for a creative engineer who, as part of a joint position in our Controls group and our Electronic and Electrical Engineering group, will:

• take a leading role in a research & development project to explore IoT solutions for the facility which integrate into our existing software ecosystems
• develop control software and display solutions within our in-house Karabo SCADA Framework on SoCs and/or microcontrollers
• perform a market survey, evaluation and design of SoC and microcontroller systems which integrate into our Control Software and Data Acquisition Ecosystem
• interface to the scientific instruments to gather requirements for IoT solutions of interest to the instruments and beamlines
• participate in support the Data department and its groups give to the facility, such as our Data Operation Center

• master degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or an equivalent qualification
• strong experience in Python 3.6+ programming and asynchronous software concepts is mandatory
• experience in microcontroller and/or SoC programming and related integration
• experience in designing PCBs for SoC or Microcontroller implementations is considered an asset
• experience in C/C++ programming is considered an asset
• experience in MicroPython programming is considered an assetexperience in supporting beamline control software is considered an asset
• experience in FPGA programming (VHDL) is considered an asset
• good communication skills, especially in terms of communicating technical aspects are a must
• good command of English as a working language is a must

Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
