The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), based in the research campus Garching near Munich, Germany, is a competence center of the Max Planck Society (MPG). It is engaged in the development and optimization of algorithms and applications for high performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence, and machine learning, as well as in the design and implementation of solutions for data-intensive projects in close collaboration with scientists of the Max Planck Institutes.
The MPCDF is looking for a
The successful candidate will be associated with the applications group at the MPCDF and will work in close collaboration with the Tokamak Theory division at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and national and international project partners on the further development of a high-performance plasma turbulence code. The main task will be to develop, implement and, systematically analyze data compression and reduced-precision methods to enhance data transfers and floating point performance in the code.
The applicant should hold a PhD in Computer Science, Physics, applied Mathematics, or a similar subject. The option to conduct a PhD thesis in the context of the project is open for suitable candidates. A strong background in numerical methods, parallel programming with MPI, and in scientific software development is mandatory. Ideally, the candidate has experience with modern Fortran and at least basic knowledge with GPU programming.
We offer the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art numerical algorithms and specifically on one of the leading plasma turbulence codes in the field, with access to the latest supercomputer technologies. In addition, a strong cooperation with European and national partners is envisaged and the presentation of research results on scientific conferences is expected.
The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. Salary will be based on experience according to the German TVöD.
