Conducting research for a changing society: This is what drives us at Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we aim to tackle the grand societal challenges of our time and conduct research into the possibilities of a digitized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a resource-efficient economy. Work together with around 7,100 employees in one of Europe’s biggest research centres and help us to shape change!
At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Fundamental Electrochemistry (IEK-9) -, we perform research on highly relevant topics related to the energy transition. For example, we investigate new battery concepts and how we can turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to the fuel of the future. In addition to advanced experimental research about the fundamentals of electrochemistry, we also prioritize theoretical simulations and the latest methods of data science in order to facilitate the interpretation of experiments as well as to develop new, digitally supported experimental techniques. The aim is to develop sustainable and cost-effective electrochemical systems with improved energy and power density, longer life time, and maximal safety. The department “Theoretical Electrochemistry and Data Science” at IEK-9 plans to design and code a flexible, adaptive tool for digital image processing. Various experimental imaging techniques are routinely applied at IEK-9 to study electrocatalytic surfaces and phase boundaries. The huge amount of accumulated imaging data requires automatized image postprocessing to facilitate the efficient and reliable analysis and interpretation of different experimental imaging techniques, such as atomic force or electron microscopy as well as tomography. We intend to use different machine learning (ML) algorithms with a strong focus on neural networks (NN) to create a versatile image processing tool as well as to develop new, advanced ML-supported imaging techniques.
